Central Texas Series : The small towns to the east of I35 are filled with the evidence of past prosperity, hopes and dreams.  Originally settled in the late 1800s, the area grew to the point of being able to support towns around 1900 and many of the buildings have dates from this era on the façades.

The towns came to life along the railroads and offered a full range of services from grain elevators to churches.  The architecture has a rugged simplicity to it, just like the people who lived here.

When the interstate highway system was built in the mid-20th century, it bypassed most of these towns by about 20 miles to the west.  They continue to hang on today as proud remnants of a more prosperous time.

John is a photographer living in Round Rock Texas on the boundry between the Black Land Prairie and the Hill Country.

He works with digital media and has published two books, "Blackland Prairie" (2008) and "Ruth Chatfield - In the Wind" (2007). They are available at blurb.com.
